He finally accepted and Softdisk would place him with a team in charge of a new, but short-lived, bi-monthly game subscription product called Gamer's Edge for the IBM PC (DOS) platform. The company SoftDisk had become familiar with his work and gave him a job offer which he declined three times, because he loved the freedom freelance work gave him, even if it payed next to nothing. He created mini games with the programming language Pascal and shipped them of by mail to receive a check barely to have enough money to pay for food and rent. John attended 2 semesters at a Kansas University before dropping out to freelance as a programmer. They where arrested and Carmack was sentenced to psychiatric evaluation before he spent a year in a juvenile home. He became interested in computers early on and says he played the arcade games Space Invaders and Pac Man, which at 14 years old lead to his heist with a group of friends who broke into a school using thermite mixed with Vaseline to melt the windows and steal Apple 2 computers. John was born in 1970, Kansas City - USA. But why should you know who Mr Carmack is? Well, you most likely have played some if his games in the past, and even if you’ve lived in a cave I’m sure a passing hiker told you about them. Few humans on this planet has had such an impact on computer and game development as John Carmack.
